Walk into any health store, browse any fitness website, or scroll any social media platform and you’ll encounter an overwhelming array of weight loss supplements promising effortless fat burning, metabolic transformation, and dramatic results. The global weight loss supplement market is worth over $33 billion — and it’s growing every year.
The honest truth: the vast majority of weight loss supplements are ineffective, a few have modest evidence-supported benefits, and a very small number have significant effects — most of which also come with significant side effects or health risks. Let me give you an evidence-based verdict on the most commonly used ones so you can make informed decisions with your money and your health.
How to Evaluate Weight Loss Supplement Claims
Before reviewing specific supplements, it helps to have a framework for evaluating claims. Evidence quality matters enormously. In ascending order of reliability: anecdotal testimonials (the least reliable — highly susceptible to placebo, selection bias, and financial incentive), observational studies (can show associations but not causation), small randomized controlled trials (more reliable but can be underpowered), systematic reviews and meta-analyses of multiple RCTs (most reliable). A supplement “backed by science” may have one small, industry-funded study. A supplement with no credible evidence will have plenty of testimonials. These are not the same thing.
Also consider: effect size. A supplement that produces 1 kg of additional weight loss over 12 weeks compared to placebo is technically “effective” but probably not worth your money if it costs $50 per month.
Caffeine
Evidence: Strong. Effect size: Modest.
Caffeine is the most well-evidenced weight loss supplement available — and also one of the cheapest. It works through multiple mechanisms: it increases basal metabolic rate by 3–11% for 3–4 hours, promotes fat oxidation (fat burning) during exercise, reduces appetite mildly, and improves exercise performance. Meta-analyses consistently show that caffeine produces modest weight loss and body fat reduction.
The effect size is modest — we’re talking 0.5–1 kg over 12 weeks in most studies. But caffeine’s effects are real, consistent, and well-understood. It’s also cheap (a strong coffee contains 80–200mg), which makes it the most cost-effective “fat burner” available.
Caveats: tolerance develops to caffeine’s metabolic effects — the benefits are greatest in non-regular caffeine users. High doses cause anxiety, elevated heart rate, and sleep disruption. Most people already consume enough caffeine to capture whatever benefit is available. Taking caffeine supplements in addition to habitual coffee/tea consumption adds side effects without proportional additional benefit.
Green Tea Extract (EGCG)
Evidence: Moderate. Effect size: Small.
Green tea contains EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and caffeine — both of which contribute to modest metabolic benefits. Meta-analyses show green tea extract produces about 1.2–1.5 kg additional weight loss over 12 weeks compared to placebo, with greater effects in Asian populations (possibly due to genetic differences in caffeine metabolism).
The effect is real but small. Drinking 2–4 cups of green tea daily captures most of the available benefit without the liver toxicity risk associated with high-dose green tea extract supplements. High-dose EGCG supplements have been linked to liver damage in case reports — a risk not present with tea consumption. If you choose to supplement, stick to doses below 800mg EGCG daily.

Protein Supplements (Whey, Casein, Plant Proteins)
Evidence: Strong. Effect size: Moderate (when used to increase total protein intake).
Protein supplements aren’t traditional “fat burners” but they’re among the most useful weight loss tools if they help you reach adequate daily protein intake. Protein’s role in fat loss — thermic effect, satiety, muscle preservation — is among the most evidence-supported nutritional interventions for weight management.
Whey protein is the most studied and has the highest leucine content (critical for muscle protein synthesis). Casein digests slowly and is particularly useful before sleep. Plant proteins (pea, rice, hemp) are effective when combined to provide complete amino acid profiles and are appropriate for vegans and those with dairy intolerance. If you can meet your protein targets from whole food alone, you don’t need supplements. If you struggle to hit 1.6–2.2g per kg of body weight from food, a protein supplement is a legitimate and evidence-backed tool.
Glucomannan
Evidence: Moderate. Effect size: Small to moderate.
Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from the konjac plant. It absorbs water to form a highly viscous gel in the gut, significantly slowing gastric emptying and extending the satiety window after meals. A 2005 meta-analysis found glucomannan supplementation (3g daily before meals) produced approximately 2.5 kg additional weight loss over 8 weeks compared to placebo, with additional benefits for LDL cholesterol and blood sugar.
This is one of the more credible fiber-based weight loss supplements. It works through the same mechanism as high-fiber foods — increasing satiety, slowing digestion — but in concentrated form. Important: take with large amounts of water (at least 250ml) and take well before meals. There is a choking risk if capsules expand in the esophagus without adequate fluid. Not suitable for those with swallowing difficulties.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)
Evidence: Mixed. Effect size: Very small in humans.
CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in dairy and meat. Animal studies showed dramatic fat loss effects — early rodent studies showed up to 60% reduction in body fat. Human studies have been considerably more modest: meta-analyses show CLA supplementation produces about 0.1 kg per week of additional fat loss — amounting to roughly 1.3 kg over 3 months. The effect is real but very small. Some studies also show adverse effects on insulin sensitivity and inflammatory markers at higher doses. Given the modest benefit, relatively high cost, and potential adverse effects, CLA is difficult to recommend as a priority supplement.
Raspberry Ketones
Evidence: Essentially none in humans. Effect size: Unknown.
Raspberry ketones were popularized by Dr. Oz in 2012 as a “miracle fat burner” and remain popular despite the absence of meaningful human evidence. The evidence base consists of animal studies and in-vitro (cell culture) research. Not a single published randomized controlled trial in humans has demonstrated weight loss from raspberry ketone supplementation. The doses shown to have effects in animal studies (1–2% of total calorie intake) would translate to prohibitively large and expensive human doses. Save your money.
Garcinia Cambogia
Evidence: Weak. Effect size: Minimal.
Garcinia cambogia contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which inhibits an enzyme involved in fat synthesis and may modestly reduce appetite. Despite massive marketing, meta-analyses of human clinical trials find the additional weight loss compared to placebo is approximately 0.8 kg over 12 weeks — barely clinically meaningful. Some studies show no benefit at all. Multiple case reports of liver injury associated with garcinia supplementation add to the poor risk-benefit profile. Not recommended.
The Only Supplements Worth Considering
To summarize: of all the supplements marketed for weight loss, the evidence most clearly supports caffeine (through regular tea or coffee, not expensive supplements), protein supplements (if needed to reach adequate protein intake), and glucomannan (if hunger management is a primary struggle). Everything else ranges from “small real effect” to “complete waste of money with potential harms.”
The supplements that produce meaningful fat loss with real effect sizes are prescription medications — GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) — which are genuinely effective but come with cost, access, and side effect considerations that require medical supervision. Over-the-counter supplements are not in the same category.
The foundational interventions for weight loss remain nutrition (calorie deficit, high protein, whole foods), exercise (strength training plus cardio), sleep, and stress management. Supplements are at best marginal additions — and at worst a very expensive distraction from the things that actually work.
Medical Treatments and Prescription Options
For many of the health concerns discussed in this article, a range of evidence-based medical treatments and FDA-approved medications are available when lifestyle modifications need support. A physician or relevant specialist — including endocrinologists, cardiologists, psychiatrists, gynecologists, or urologists — can assess your specific situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment pathway.
If prescription treatment is recommended, understanding your prescription drug coverage is important. Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries; private insurance plans vary in their drug formularies. Ask your prescribing physician whether a generic equivalent is available — for most approved medications, generics offer identical efficacy at significantly lower cost. Prior authorization is sometimes required by insurers for specialty medications; your doctor’s office can typically handle this process on your behalf.
Clinical trials offer access to cutting-edge treatments not yet commercially available — often at no cost to participants. If you have a condition that hasn’t responded well to standard approaches, ask your doctor whether you might be eligible for a relevant trial. The National Institutes of Health’s ClinicalTrials.gov database is searchable by condition, location, and age. Hospital systems and academic medical centers typically run the most trials and can often connect patients with trial coordinators directly. Participation in clinical research advances medicine for everyone — and may provide access to treatment that isn’t yet widely available.
